Everyone has the same dilemma...

Why do I lose everything that matters to me through death? Friends, family, and ultimately every possession you own, will be torn from you by death. Why does that concern us? It's because "God has set eternity in the hearts of men..." 2

Isn't anyone unaffected by the passage of time and death? Yes, there is one. God, who created time, is free from the constraints of time and in no way affected by it. God said of himself, "I the Lord do not change." 3 This fact is confirmed in scripture many times...

"Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." 4

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." 5

How can God sit by and not punish all this evil in the world? Think about it. A good judge, in any court of law, must punish crime. If he ignores any wrong, then he is corrupt and should be punished himself. THEREFORE: SINCE GOD IS HOLY & JUST... "God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil." 6 and He "will by no means clear the guilty." 7

The day is coming when all wrong doers will be brought to justice and punished.

So you think it's good that evil doers will be punished (and it is)... But what does that have to do with me?

Compare yourself to the standard of God's Law... 8

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.

  2. You shall not make for yourself an idol.
  3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
  5. Honor your father and mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not lie.
  10. You shall not covet.

Broken a few of God's Laws?!

Think Not? Well then you've never stolen anything (not even a pen or paper clip), you've never redefined God to suit yourself (versus what scripture says), never told even a "white" lie, always honoured your parents, never lusted after anyone (which Jesus said is the same as committing adultery) 9 and of course you have never been mad at anyone without cause (which scripture says is the same as murder.) 10 As you can see, the truth shows that this is impossible and we're not like that at all... We have all broken God's Law and have sinned against Him. "The soul that sins will die. (Ezekiel 18:20)" Physical and spiritual death is the result of sin.

The Bible tells us that "There is no one righteous, not even one" 11... "for all have sinned." 12 We are also told that "no one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin." 13 When we stand before God on Judgement day our sins will be entered as evidence against us. Our thoughts, deeds, and every secret thing in our lives, will be made known. 14 We will be without excuse 15 before a Holy God who will administer justice and Hell will be our final destination. 16

Guilty as charged. Sentenced to death.

No hope.

... Dead wrong. There is hope!

"Jesus Christ has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" 17

God has given us ONE way to escape the just and lawful punishment of breaking His law. Jesus said, "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me." 18 "...for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." 19

Guilty, condemned to death. Awaiting execution of the sentence...

BUT WAIT: God paid the fine for you and me.

"And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death -- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." 20 The Bible also says, "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Christ Jesus our Lord." 21

God, in the flesh, bore the penalty of your sins and mine - death. So how can I be saved?...

What must I do to be saved?

Even as we cannot earn a gift, so we cannot earn eternal life by our good works. Compared to God's holiness the best of our good works are like filthy rags. 22 God's way is the only way... "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." 23 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." 24

Scripture tells us that "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." 25

Coming in repentance (which means that you want to turn away from sin) and faith (which means you trust in Jesus to save you), you have access to God through the shed blood of Jesus...

If this is your heart's desire, say so to God in your own words. If you want, this is a sample prayer.

"Dear God, I know that I have broken Your Holy Law and sinned against You and You alone. I ask for your forgiveness and thank you for sending Jesus to suffer on the cross in my place. I now trust in Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and believe that You have raised Him from the dead. Please change me, make me a new creation in You, and teach me to follow you day by day. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen."

For those who think that following Jesus is unnecessary or not for them, here's a short story.

Walking in Darkness

A man walking in darkness could see a light far off to his right. To his left he heard many people shouting, laughing, and calling his name. Turning his back on the light, he turned toward the crowd and continued on in darkness. A while later the man walked off a cliff. Being a very high cliff he had much to time to think... He first thought, "Everyone else was headed this way, they all couldn't be wrong." His second thought was to justify his choice, "Besides, this way was more pleasurable, and anyway I couldn't have walked off a cliff; I don't believe they exist." Then the harsh consequences of breaking the Law of Gravity were realized -- far too late.

The Bible says, "For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." 26 "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned." 27 "If you warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die in his sin." 28

Whoever hears My word and believes on Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. 29

Scripture also warns, "Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." 30

You know the choice, don't delay.

Jesus is My Lord and Savior - What Now?

Jesus has promised to be with you always; to never leave you or forsake you. He has given you the promise that you have passed from death unto life and that God will "keep you from falling, and present you faultless before the presence of His glory, with exceeding joy." 30 No one can pluck you out of God's hand. Be warned that trials will come, people will mock and mistreat you for the sake of the gospel. But again, He has promised to give you the strength to endure and to overcome. Seek His help, rely on Him. Read God's Word daily, hide it in your heart, and as you abide in Christ, you will see the "fruit" of His Spirit who lives in you. Remember to pray - God will hear and answer your prayers and will supply all of your needs according to His riches. Find other believers and meet with them regularly for fellowship, encouragement and accountability.

Your focus is loving God...

"Jesus said unto him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.'" 31

"Jesus replied, 'If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.'" 32
